The Area

Situated on the border of Normandy and Brittany, William the Conqueror founded Saint-James in the eleventh century on a high promontory. Fortified city walls protected the town and it was an overnight stop for the pilgrims en route from Saint-Jacques de Compostelle to Mont Saint-Michel.

Rich in history, Saint-James has the second largest American cemetery for soldiers, sailors and airmen killed in action during the World War Two Normandy landings of 1944.

A short drive away, Fougères, with it's turreted mediaeval castle, is worth a visit.

Today, Saint-James is a thriving rural market town with many local amenities, five minutes from the A84 motorway.
